Founding Frontend Staff Engineer

This role suits a seasoned generalist engineer, with vast experience building Frontend-applications, who thrives in fast-paced, low-hierarchy environments, and enjoys wearing multiple hats. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers in a small, high-impact team that takes pride in crafting quality solutions and learning together.

Core Responsibilities

• Design, Develop, and Deploy: Work across the entire technology stack, from backend services and infrastructure to front-end development. Build, test, and deploy solutions based on evolving business requirements, ensuring high-quality results.

• End-to-End Ownership: Lead architectural decisions from initial design through to implementation. Collaborate with the small senior team to refine solutions and ensure they meet business objectives.

• Transparent Collaboration: Maintain living documentation of technical decisions, processes, and system architecture. Foster an environment of transparency and continuity within the team by sharing insights and ensuring clarity.

Preferred Experience

• Web Applications: Clear mental model of how a lean, ever-growing web application should be designed, developed and evolved.

• Startup Experience: Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or Senior Engineer in startup environments, or similar experience where building and shipping was the main focus.

• Career Diversity: Experience working in multiple companies or environments, seen multiple implementations of different architecture patterns and tools

• Technical Expertise: min. 8-10 years of professional experience in software engineering.

Technical Skills

• Strong Technical Background: Proficiency across various technology areas, with a strong foundation in frontend technologies and tools

• Key Programming Languages (at least two):

  • JavaScript/TypeScript

  • React/React Native

  • Python

• Stack:

  • Firebase

  • Redux Toolkit

• System Design Competency: Expertise in architectural decision-making and the ability to design systems that balance complexity with maintainability.

What We Avoid

• Dependency on External Teams: Candidates who require extensive support from other teams or external resources to deliver working software would not be a great fit.

• Beyond Standard Agile: Ideal candidates are those who explore beyond conventional sprints and ceremonies, leveraging whatever methodologies best fit the team and project to drive quality and impact.

• Merchant of technical complexity: Engineers who over-engineer on technical requirements and constantly under-engineer business requirements would not be a great fit.

Soft Skills

• Strong Written Communication: Skilled at long-form communication, including detailed technical documentation and decision-making rationale. Comfortable reading and contributing actively to comprehensive documentation.

• Autonomous and Pragmatic: Capable of independently framing problems, designing solutions, and executing tasks. Pragmatic in balancing technical idealism with real-world constraints.

• Focused Execution: Thrives in a hands-on role, prioritising practical outcomes over leadership or management responsibilities.
